The event that we celebrate today is certainly very picturesque. These three exotic figures—the Magi, who we sometimes call the Three Kings or the Wise Men—arrive in Bethlehem. They find the Christ child and kneel down, and they offer him their gifts, which are precious and just as exotic as they are: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. It is a scene that we like to imagine and sing about, and to make into paintings and statues in the Nativity Scene. And in many countries, appropriately, it is this day that has traditionally be the day of giving gifts, in imitation of the Magi giving gifts to the baby Jesus.

But as picturesque as this scene is, there is much more to see. We note that officially we do not call this day “Three Kings Day,” but rather “Epiphany”: a word that is a synonym of “revelation” or “manifestation.” (more…)

14th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C: July 7, 2013
Isa 66:10-14; Ps 66; Gal 6:14-18; Luke 10:1-12, 17-20

What an adventure these 72 disciples of Jesus experienced! What a commission, and what results! Our Gospel reading today comes within the long, gradual journey that our Lord Jesus is making from Galilee to Jerusalem, where he will give his life for us on the cross. And we hear today about how he sent these 72 disciples of his ahead of him to every town and place he intended to visit.

Can you imagine being sent on that mission? Going with one other person to places you had never been; speaking to people you had never met; traveling light, as he instructed; moving fast; knowing that many would reject your message, but just moving on to those who would receive it? (more…)

Is 66, 10-14; Sal 65; Gal 6, 14-18; Lc 10, 1-12.17-20

(more…)

II Domingo de Pascua, Año C: 7 Abril 2013
Hch 5, 12-16; Sal 117; Ap 1, 9-13.17-19; Jn 20, 19-31

(more…)

2nd Sunday of Easter, Year C: April 7, 2013
Acts 5:12-16; Ps 118; Rev 1:9-13, 17-19; John 20:19-31

On that first Easter Sunday—on the evening of that first day of the weekthe disciples were shut up in a room, with the doors locked, for fear—for fear that the same authorities who had just put Jesus to death would come after them next. And one week later they were inside again with the doors locked again—even though they knew he was risen.

But how much things had changed by the time of our first reading, which was probably just several months later. (more…)
