Pentecostés, la Virgen, y decir Sí al Espíritu Santo

Domingo de Pentecostés, Año B: 27 Mayo 2012
Hch 2, 1-11; Sal 103; Gal 5, 16-25; Jn 15, 26-27; 16, 12-15

(more…)

Pentecost, the Virgin Mary, and saying Yes to the Holy Spirit

Mass during the Day: Acts 2:1-11; Ps 104; Gal 5:16-25; John 15:26-27, 16:12-15

We read in the 11th chapter of the Book of Genesis about the Tower of Babel—about how, in the mists of early human history, there was an attempt, in a valley in Mesopotamia, to build a large tower—a tower with its top in the sky, so that its builders could make a name for themselves. (Gen 11:4) It was a project of human pride and ambition, trying to build themselves up apart from God—and it resulted in tension, confusion, and division—those who had tried to work together then separated, speaking different languages, living in different places.

On this day, the Feast of Pentecost, we celebrate the reversal of Babel. (more…)

One in Christ

10th in a series of short homilies on the Mass

The Second Vatican Council observed that the world longs for unity—and yet we always find different forces and divisions that drive people apart. How can this unity ever be achieved? The Council wrote:

God… does not make men holy and save them merely as individuals, without bond or link between one another. Rather has it pleased Him to bring men together as one people, a people which acknowledges Him in truth and serves Him in holiness. (Lumen gentium, 9)

And the Church that Christ calls and forms becomes “a lasting and sure seed of unity, hope and salvation for the whole human race.” A seed: small, but containing within itself that unity; and, as it draws persons into it, bringing them that unity that they long for.

It was the time of Shavuot, the Festival of Weeks; called in Greek “Pentecost,” which means “50th”—and many of the People of Israel were gathered in Jerusalem. 50 days earlier, they had celebrated the Passover, celebrating when the Lord had delivered them from slavery in Egypt. Now they celebrated when he then gave them the Law at Mount Sinai, for the Law was utterly central to their identity and life. The deliverance and the gift: two events that made them a people and defined their relationship with the Lord.

But that year, it was different. (more…)

Adviento: Nuestro Señor viene al salvarnos

I Domingo de Adviento, Año A: 28 Noviembre 2010
Isa 2, 1-5; Sal 121; Rom 13, 11-14; Mat 24, 37-44

(more…)

Overcoming what divides us

23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B: Sept. 5-6, 2009
Isa 35:4-7; Ps 146:7-10; James 2:1-5; Mark 7:31-37

Last year, while I was a transitional deacon, my assignment was at the Catholic Student Center at the University of Maryland. While I was at a student retreat with them in the fall, I learned that a couple movies were pretty important to several of the students: namely, “High School Musical” and “Mean Girls.” I hadn’t seen either one of those movies, so I took that as homework over my Thanksgiving Break.

And I found there was something very similar between the two movies. One of the enemies that characters struggled against was simply the social structure in the American high school: a world of cliques, in which the students divided up into small groups of similar people. (more…)
