Jesus was baptized to supercharge baptism

This is a translation of the Spanish homily I preached.
The Baptism of the Lord, Year A: Jan. 12, 2014
Isa 42:1-4, 6-7; Ps 29; Acts 10:34-38; Matt 3:13-17

About a month ago, we were in the season of Advent. And as we focused upon preparing ourselves to receive the Lord Jesus at his Second Coming, we turned again to John the Baptist, who prepared people to receive him in his first coming. And we saw that John was preaching repentance, and practicing a baptism of repentance.

  • He preached repentance: a change of life, a turning of oneself, away from sin and what is bad, toward God and what is good. And it is a turning in heart and mind, and in outward action.
  • And he drew people into a baptism of repentance: into themselves entering into this symbolic action that was performed by non-Jews who were converting to become Jewish. (more…)

(more…)

His fire brings change

I often heard it said that “people don’t like change.” It seems that this increases as we get older; and it certainly increases when things are going the way that we want them to, and we have our lives arranged just so. Indeed, it seems that Americans have a talent for changing every religion they meet—whether it be Catholicism or Buddhism or whatever—into the message that we are perfect just the way we are, and we don’t need to change at all; it’s everyone else who needs to change! Just leave us in peace.

But this is not the message and mission of our Lord Jesus. (more…)

This Christmas, pause to reflect

There is a man who tells the story of when he was growing up, many years ago. His mother played the piano at their church, for over thirty years; and she tried to teach him to play the piano as well. He wasn’t very good at it, or very interested, but she tried. She taught him about scales, and major and minor keys. And one day she told him that the best news in the world could be found by playing a simple scale on the piano. What could she possibly mean? She told him to play an 8-note scale. He did. No, she said, you played it wrong; you need to play it from high to low. So he did. How was that good news? Well, she said, you played it right, but you left out the pauses: (more…)

Corpus Christi: The blood of the new covenant

Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, Year B:
June 10, 2012

Exod 24:3-8; Ps 116; Heb 9:11-15; Mark 14:12-16, 22-26

Introduction
Today we celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi: the feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Traditionally, it comes this past Thursday—exactly 9 weeks after Holy Thursday, when Christ first instituted the Eucharist. From then on, in that sacrament—in the Mass—our Lord changes bread and wine into his own Body and Blood, to make present his one perfect sacrifice; to nourish the faithful with himself; and to make himself present to us always, as we journey through life.

One traditional practice of Corpus Christi is the Eucharistic procession. As Pope John Paul II urged eight years ago, “our faith” in our Lord who gives himself to us in this way “needs to be everywhere proclaimed, especially in our streets and homes, as an expression of our grateful love and as an inexhaustible source of blessings.” (more…)
