(more…)

Zech 12:10-11, 13:1; Ps 63; Gal 3:26-29; Luke 9:18-24

Right before today’s Gospel reading comes the account of the feeding of the 5000 that we heard three weeks ago on the feast of Corpus Christi—when our Lord Jesus was surrounded by a great, hungry crowd of 5000 men, plus women and children, in a remote location, and he miraculously fed all of them starting with just five loaves of bread and two fish.

And after this, he took his disciples apart by themselves to pray. Because he has a very important question to ask them; and he wants them to be able to hear, not the din of the world, but the quiet voice of his Father and of the Holy Spirit. (more…)

Keeping Jesus’ word, from Old Law to New Law

6th Sunday of Easter, Year C: May 5, 2013
Acts 15:1-2, 22-29; Ps 67; Rev 21:10-14, 22-23; John 14:23-29

We hear our Lord Jesus say in today’s Gospel reading: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” What beautiful words! We want that kind of peace so much. In fact, the whole world wants that kind of peace. And our Lord Jesus offers it.

But we also hear him say: “Whoever loves me will keep my word.” Now that’s different, isn’t it? It’s one thing to offer peace; it’s another thing to require obedience. (more…)

IV Domingo de Pascua, Año C: 21 Abril 2013
Hch 13, 14.43-52; Sal 99; Ap 7, 9.14-17; Jn 10, 27-30

(more…)

Acts 13:14, 43-52; Ps 100; Rev 7: 9, 14-17; John 10:27-30

I have a dream! Well, actually, it’s more of a vision. It’s the vision that St. John had so many centuries ago, which we heard in the second reading:

I, John, had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and tongue. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation comes from our God, who is seated on the throne, and from the Lamb.”

Isn’t this a glorious picture? Isn’t this what we long for—this peace, this harmony and love between all people—and that we sense must be possible somehow? And perhaps we long for it all the more during a time like this past week, when the news has so often reminded us again of the divisions and struggles between peoples. (more…)

Viernes Santo de la Pasión del Señor: 29 Marzo 2013
Is 52, 13—53, 12; Sal 30; Heb 4, 14-16; 5, 7-9; Jn 18, 1—19, 42

(more…)

The truth of Good Friday

This is a translation of the Spanish homily I preached.
Good Friday of the Passion of the Lord: March 29, 2013
Isa 52:13–53:12; Ps 31; Heb 4:14-16, 5:7-9; John 18:1–19:42

On Good Friday we come face to face with the Passion, the suffering, of our Lord Jesus Christ. And it is terrible, painful suffering. It hits us hard to witness it: to hear it again, to see it again, in drama and liturgy, in memory and history.

Indeed, we are amazed at him—as we heard in the first reading: amazed at him—so marred was his look beyond human semblance and his appearance beyond that of the sons of man… (more…)

Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper

Exod 12:1-8, 11-14; Ps 116; 1 Cor 11:23-26; John 13:1-15

Tonight we celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. This occurred in the midst of the yearly Jewish celebration of Passover in Jerusalem. This past Sunday we heard from the Gospel of Luke: “When the hour came, he took his place at table with the apostles. He said to them, ‘I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer…'” (Luke 22:14-15) And so let us remember what this Passover celebration was; for our Lord Jesus then took it and raised it to a whole new level in himself. At the Procession with Palms
Luke 19:28-40

For all the mighty deeds they had seen… his disciples began to praise God aloud with joy.

For some three years, Jesus’ disciples had traveled with him. They had listened to his wise and powerful words; they had seen his miraculous deeds, healing and feeding and freeing; they had experienced his love, for them and for others.

And now they saw him approaching Jerusalem as a benevolent king. (more…)
