Three years ago, I had the privilege to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land with a group of other priests. Of course, one of the places we went was Nazareth. There, we visited the large church called the Basilica of the Annunciation—marking the spot where the angel Gabriel visited Mary and invited her to become the Mother of God; where she said yes; and thus the very spot, marked, where the Word was made flesh.
But there on the same property is a smaller church, the Church of St. Joseph. It was there that we celebrated Mass. This church contains artwork not only of St. Joseph himself, but of the Holy Family: (more…)

Advent and the growing spark of hope

Back in 1950, the residents of the town of Flagstaff Village, Maine, knew that their town would soon be flooded. A dam was being built that would expand the nearby lake, completely covering where their town was then standing. And so plans were being made to move the residents elsewhere, and to clear the land before the flooding.
And during those final months, as one man noted, no repairs were being done. Which is pretty understandable. After all, why paint a wall, or repair a hole, or improve any aspect of a house that will soon be destroyed? So no one did it. They just let them go.

En el jueves pasado, nuestro Santo Padre Benedicto XVI realizó su renunciación de su ministerio como sucesor de San Pedro. Porque, como declaró unas dos semanas y media anteriormente, había discernido que ahora no tiene el “vigor tanto del cuerpo como del espíritu” que la Iglesia de Cristo necesita en su Papa “en el mundo de hoy… para gobernar la barca de san Pedro y anunciar el Evangelio.” Y por eso Benedicto ha abierto la Santa Sede para un nuevo Papa, de tal vigor para guiarnos bien en nuestro viaje por este mundo. Y oramos por el colegio de Cardenales mientras que se preparan para elegir este Papa.
Pero en las últimas horas antes de la hora efectiva de su renunciación, Benedicto, que ahora es “Papa Emérito,” nos dijo: “Ya no soy Sumo Pontífice de la Iglesia Católica… Soy simplemente un peregrino que empieza la última etapa de su peregrinación en esta tierra.” (more…)
