Do not pass me by

Gen 18:1-10; Ps 15; Col 1:24-28; Luke 10:38-42

The scene in our first reading is memorable. Abraham and his household are camped near Hebron, some 20 miles to the south of present-day Jerusalem in the Holy Land. It was a hot day, and perhaps Abraham was dozing as he sat in the entrance of his tent during the heat of the day. Then, suddenly, he looked up and saw three men. He sprang into action. Offering hospitality was an incredibly important duty in his culture—far more so than in ours—and he hurried to do so—he ran to greet them. And he begged them: Please do not pass your servant by. What does it mean to be the Son of God?

1st Sunday of Lent, Year C: Feb. 17, 2013
Deut 26:4-10; Ps 91:1-2, 10-15; Rom 10:8-13; Luke 4:1-13

Several years ago, while I was in seminary, I had a chance to watch Joel Osteen on television for the first time. I had heard of him, this Evangelical Protestant preacher with a growing following; but I hadn’t seen him. What would he be like? What would he say? Standing near a great, turning frame of a globe, he told his listeners that they were children of God; children of the King; royalty! And I thought: Great; good message! Because this is indeed what Christ has made us in baptism, adopting us into his Sonship, making us adopted sons and daughters of God. It’s an important message, and one that we need to be reminded of again and again.

And then he proceeded on to apply that message. Being a son or daughter of the King means—that you are a winner! What?, I thought. (more…)

¿Qué significa ser el Hijo de Dios?

I Domingo de Cuaresma, Año C: 17 Febrero 2013
Dt 26, 4-10; Sal 90; Rom 10, 8-13; Lc 4, 1-13

(more…)

The Real Presence of Christ in the Mass

Listen to mp3 file
4th in a series of short homilies on the Mass

In the Mass, we encounter our Lord Jesus Christ, made truly present. In my last homily in this series, we took note of two of the ways in which he is present. First, in the assembly of the baptized—each of whom he has joined to himself and made a member of his Mystical Body. Second, in the person of the minister—the priest or bishop changed by ordination to be able to act in the person of Christ the head. The Eucharistic assembly, body and head, is complete.

And the Lord is present “in his word, since it is he himself who speaks when the holy scriptures are read in the Church.” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 7) (more…)

Why do we attend Mass?

Listen to mp3 file
1st in a series of short homilies on the Mass

Now that we have concluded the Christmas Season, and as we enter Ordinary Time, I want to devote some attention in these homilies at Mass—to the Mass itself. So that each of us can understand the Mass better and enter into it more intentionally and more deeply.

And I would like to begin today by asking: Why do we come to Mass? Why do you come to Mass; why do others? (more…)

XV Domingo Ordinario, Año A: 10 Julio 2011
Isa 55, 10-11; Sal 64; Rom 8, 18-23; Mat 13, 1-23

(more…)
