“Yo lo he hecho. Busca a mí.” Continue reading “Recuerda quién te liberó”

11th in a series of short homilies on the Mass

We read in the Gospel according to Matthew: “Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, ‘Take, eat; this is my body.'” (Matt 26:26) These four actions are distinctive—took, blessed, broke, and gave—so that we recognize them when the Gospel writers use them at other times (when Christ miraculously multiplies the loaves and fishes, and when he appears to the disciples on the road to Emmaus: Matt 14:19; Mark 6:41, 14:22; Luke 9:16, 24:30). And they are performed again in every Mass:

3rd Sunday of Easter, Year A: May 8, 2011
Acts 2:14, 22-33; Ps 16; 1 Pet 1:17-21; Luke 24:13-35

Each year, Americans celebrate this second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day, a day to honor mothers and motherhood—to honor your own mother, and the other mothers that you know.

And we might suppose that, when coming to Mass on this day, it would be appropriate to hear the same Scriptures that we hear on Holy Family Sunday, right after Christmas.
