24th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B: Sept. 13, 2015
Isa 50:5-9; Ps 116; James 2:14-18; Mark 8:27-35

Our Lord Jesus, in today’s Gospel reading, poses a question to his disciples that is very important: “Who do you say that I am?” “I, Jesus of Nazareth, who you have been following—who am I?” And when we find the true answer to that question, we find that, in a way, it is the central question we have to answer, because so much else follows from who he is. The Presentation of the Lord: Feb. 2, 2014
Mal 3:1-4; Ps 24; Heb 2:14-18; Luke 2:22-40

The feast of the Presentation that we celebrate today has traditionally been the conclusion of the Church’s Christmas season. Indeed, it was only about 5 years ago that the Vatican began taking down its Christmas decorations before today! And so today we return to the theme of Christ as the Light of the World.

  • 40 days ago, at the Midnight Mass on Christmas, we heard from the Prophet Isaiah: “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.” (more…)

Going home to Mom—and to our Heavenly Father

This is a translation of the Spanish homily I preached.
Ascension of the Lord, Year C: May 12, 2013
Acts 1:1-11; Ps 47; Eph 1:17-23; Luke 24:46-53

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. For 40 days after our Lord Jesus Christ rose from the dead on Easter Sunday, he appeared alive to his disciples, spoke with them, ate with them, and unfolded to them the mysteries of what he had done and what he was about to do. And then came the day when he parted from them; when he was taken up to heaven and a cloud took him from their sight; and, as we heard in the first reading, the apostles were left looking intently at the sky—now alone. Ascensión del Señor, Año C: 12 Mayo 2013
Hch 1, 1-11; Sal 46; Ef 1, 17-23; Lc 24, 46-53

(more…)

5th Sunday of Easter, Year C: April 28, 2013
Acts 14:21-27; Ps 145; Rev 21:1-5; John 13:31-35

Four weeks ago, on Easter Sunday, we celebrated the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead. For, after his passion and crucifixion and death and burial, on the third day he was raised from the dead, gloriously alive, his body transformed. That was the beginning: for our Lord Jesus was the firstfruits of the Resurrection.

And today, on the 5th Sunday of Easter, we catch a glimpse of the fulfillment of the Resurrection. (more…)

La verdad del Viernes Santo

Viernes Santo de la Pasión del Señor: 29 Marzo 2013
Is 52, 13—53, 12; Sal 30; Heb 4, 14-16; 5, 7-9; Jn 18, 1—19, 42

(more…)

The truth of Good Friday

This is a translation of the Spanish homily I preached.
Good Friday of the Passion of the Lord: March 29, 2013
Isa 52:13–53:12; Ps 31; Heb 4:14-16, 5:7-9; John 18:1–19:42

On Good Friday we come face to face with the Passion, the suffering, of our Lord Jesus Christ. And it is terrible, painful suffering. It hits us hard to witness it: to hear it again, to see it again, in drama and liturgy, in memory and history.

Indeed, we are amazed at him—as we heard in the first reading: amazed at him—so marred was his look beyond human semblance and his appearance beyond that of the sons of man… (more…)

Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper

Exod 12:1-8, 11-14; Ps 116; 1 Cor 11:23-26; John 13:1-15

Tonight we celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. This occurred in the midst of the yearly Jewish celebration of Passover in Jerusalem. This past Sunday we heard from the Gospel of Luke: “When the hour came, he took his place at table with the apostles. He said to them, ‘I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer…'” (Luke 22:14-15) And so let us remember what this Passover celebration was; for our Lord Jesus then took it and raised it to a whole new level in himself.
