Su fidelidad, nuestra fe, y nuestra fidelidad

Escucha mp3
XIX Domingo Ordinario, Año C: 11 Agosto 2013
Sb 18, 6-9; Sal 32; Hb 11, 1-2.8-19; Lc 12, 32-48

(more…)

Faith, knowledge, and faithfulness

19th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C: Aug. 11, 2013
Wis 18:6-9; Ps 33; Heb 11:1-2, 8-19; Luke 12:32-48

In our second reading today, we heard a portion of the famous chapter from the Letter to the Hebrews on faith. And how appropriate, during this Year of Faith, which began last October and will last until Christ the King Sunday in late November of this year.

And we know that faith was very important to our Lord Jesus during his years of earthly ministry. He praised great faith when he found it; he was disappointed when he found a lack of it; he chided his disciples at times for having “little faith”; he encouraged people to have faith and spoke about the great things that faith allowed to happen.

Do you have faith? Do you want it? Do you want more of it? (more…)

Discovering that Jesus is God, and that God is three

This is a translation of the Spanish homily I preached.
Most Holy Trinity, Year C: May 26, 2013
Prov 8:22-31; Ps 8; Rom 5:1-5; John 16:12-15

Today we celebrate the truth of the Most Holy Trinity: the great truth that the God we worship is one God in three persons: the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. That God is three, in one way, and is one, in another way: that God is three distinct divine persons, one divine nature, one divine substance.

And we know that this is a distinctively Christian truth. Each Mass begins with the words, “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Each person is baptized with the words: “I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (more…)

(more…)

What do you do with the mystery of the Trinity?

Most Holy Trinity, Year C: May 26, 2013
Prov 8:22-31; Ps 8; Rom 5:1-5; John 16:12-15

Today we celebrate the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity. But what is a mystery? In books of fiction, a mystery is often a puzzle related to a crime that a detective is supposed to solve. But when we speak about the faith, it means something different. From what I have heard, it is something that you say when you want a child to stop asking questions! “No, I don’t know who or why or how! It’s a mystery. Beat it, kid!”

But, of course, that’s not really what a mystery of the faith is. A mystery is something that is initially out of reach of our human reason— (more…)

Faith, doubts, and difficulties in the Year of Faith

Audio only: Listen to mp3 file (Length: 68:07)
A talk given as part of the Lenten Mission Series for the Year of Faith, at St. Mary’s of Piscataway, in Clinton, Md., on Feb. 19, 2013.

Faith is our response to God’s revelation to us:  a personal receptiveness to his personal reaching out. Father Dan explores how we can address doubts that might undercut our faith in general, or difficulties that we might feel about particular teachings of the faith. “Be not unbelieving, but believe!” (more…)
