11th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C: June 16, 2013
2 Sam 12:7-10, 13; Ps 32; Gal 2:16, 19-21; Luke 7:36–8:3

In the middle of Luke chapter 7, our Lord Jesus was speaking to a crowd about John the Baptist—a crowd that included some Pharisees. And he said that, whereas they reacted differently to John, they accused Jesus of being “a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.” (7:34)  And what then follows immediately in Luke is this story about Jesus being at a dinner, and this contrast as he interacts with a Pharisee and a sinner. Sharing in Christ’s prophetic office

14th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B: July 8, 2012
Ezek 2:2-5; Ps 123; 2 Cor 12:7-10; Mark 6:1-6

In the Old Testament, we see that the People of Israel had three key roles or callings, who helped keep them connected to the Lord:

  • The priest, who taught them the Law and facilitated their offering of sacrifices in the Temple.
  • The king, who led them and organized their society in right and just ways, faithful to the Lord.
  • And the prophet, who spoke for the Lord and constantly called them back to faithfulness to their covenant with him.

Some individuals exercised two of these roles. But our Lord Jesus Christ fulfilled all three perfectly, exercising the triple office or triple “munera” of prophet, priest, and king. And because he does, so do we, from our baptism into him. (more…)

Participar del carácter profético de Cristo

Cuando leemos las páginas del Antiguo Testamento, vemos tres oficios o funciones que ayudaron al Pueblo de Israel en permanecer juntado al Señor:

  • el sacerdote les enseñó la Ley e hizo posible sus sacrificios en el Templo;
  • el rey les guió y arregló su sociedad de una manera correcta y justa, fiel al Señor;
  • y el profeta habló en nombre del Señor y siempre les llamó a regresar a fidelidad a la alianza con él.

Cuando leemos las páginas del Nuevo Testamento, vemos que nuestro Señor Jesucristo cumple perfectamente los tres oficios, los “tria múnera,” del profeta, sacerdote, y rey. Y, porque él lo hace, también nosotros, por nuestro bautismo en él. (more…)

It happens often in the movies—especially fantasy or adventure movies; sometimes action or thrillers. You start out with the main character, who seems pretty average, leading a pretty normal, quiet life. And then this person meets someone or receives a message:
