Today we begin the new Church Year. And we know that the two greatest feast days of the year—the two poles on which the whole year hangs—are Christmas and Easter. Christmas, which celebrates the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus—that God the Son took on human nature, and became man—and was born for us, a baby in Bethlehem; and Easter, which celebrates his passion, death, and resurrection:  all of this to save us! And we celebrate these two feasts not only as single days but as the beginnings of the Christmas season and Easter season; and in both cases we prepare for them with special seasons of preparation. A few weeks ago, I was visiting one of our classes in the school; and in their religion textbook they were beginning a chapter entitled “Christ Will Come Again.” It was a chapter that presented to them this truth that we believe and that we profess each week: that Jesus will come again in glory; that we look forward to his Second Coming.

And this is the primary focus of Advent. The word “Advent” itself comes from the Latin for coming or arrival: it is Jesus’ coming, his Second Coming, that we called to look forward to, and to prepare for. (more…)

Today we hear our Lord Jesus tell the parable that is often known as the “dishonest steward.” And this is a parable that often puzzles people. We might wonder: Why does the steward’s master commend him for changing the promissory notes of the debtors? Is Jesus telling us that we should act like the steward; and, if so, how?

It seems that Jesus is shifting between different details of his parable, and different analogies, in a way that can be confusing. But if we dig into this a bit, I think we discover a single, basic message that he is trying to convey to us. (more…)

(more…)

Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths

“All flesh shall see the salvation of God.” Our readings today paint us a glorious picture of what the Lord will accomplish when he comes: the wrongs he will set right, the blessings he will bestow. The prophets Isaiah and Baruch were speaking to the People of Israel in a difficult time of suffering and exile, with their cities destroyed, their people separated from each other, and everything looking quite hopeless. And they promise: mourning and misery will change into splendor and glory; joy and peace, mercy and justice will be restored; when the Lord lays out the way back home. (more…)

Un Adviento hermoso y transformativo

I Domingo de Adviento, Año C: 2 Diciembre 2012
Jr 33, 14-16; Sal 24; 1 Tes 3, 12—4, 2; Lc 21, 25-28.34-36

(more…)
