Going home to Mom—and to our Heavenly Father

This is a translation of the Spanish homily I preached.
Ascension of the Lord, Year C: May 12, 2013
Acts 1:1-11; Ps 47; Eph 1:17-23; Luke 24:46-53

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. For 40 days after our Lord Jesus Christ rose from the dead on Easter Sunday, he appeared alive to his disciples, spoke with them, ate with them, and unfolded to them the mysteries of what he had done and what he was about to do. And then came the day when he parted from them; when he was taken up to heaven and a cloud took him from their sight; and, as we heard in the first reading, the apostles were left looking intently at the sky—now alone. Regresar a casa a Mamá—y al Padre celestial

Ascensión del Señor, Año C: 12 Mayo 2013
Hch 1, 1-11; Sal 46; Ef 1, 17-23; Lc 24, 46-53

Mother’s Day and your spiritual jewelry

6th Sunday of Easter, Year B: May 13, 2012
Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48; Ps 98; 1 John 4:7-10; John 15:9-17

As I hear these words of our Lord Jesus on this Mother’s Day weekend, I am struck by how closely they parallel the structure and pattern of love within our human families. For he says: “As the Father loves me, so I also love you… as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love… [so] if you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love.”

Christ is speaking out of his relationship with God the Father: a relationship that has existed from all eternity between these two Divine Persons of the Blessed Trinity. He is telling us about his Father and about their relationship; and he is inviting us to be drawn into that relationship, to share in his own divine life. (more…)

Mother’s Day: On the path of life, you have never been unloved

3rd Sunday of Easter, Year A: May 8, 2011
Acts 2:14, 22-33; Ps 16; 1 Pet 1:17-21; Luke 24:13-35

Each year, Americans celebrate this second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day, a day to honor mothers and motherhood—to honor your own mother, and the other mothers that you know.

And we might suppose that, when coming to Mass on this day, it would be appropriate to hear the same Scriptures that we hear on Holy Family Sunday, right after Christmas.

  • To hear from the Book of Sirach [2:6]: “He who reveres his father will live a long life; he obeys the Lord who brings comfort to his mother.” (more…)

What has Easter done to Mother’s Day?

6th Sunday of Easter, Year C: May 8-9, 2010
Acts 15:1-2, 22-29; Ps 67:2-3, 5-6, 8; Rev 21:10-14, 22-23; John 14:23-29

The Scriptures tell us many stories about mothers and their children. And on this Mother’s Day, one story that caught my interest comes from the Old Testament, from the Book of Exodus, chapter 2. That story takes place probably a little after 1300 B.C., when the People of Israel were slaves in the land of Egypt. And in this story we encounter a young wife and mother named Jochebed who gives birth to a son. [Her name is found in Exod 6:20 and Num 26:59.]

This was a time when Pharaoh had ordered that all Hebrew baby boys should be killed. So how was this mother going to save her newborn son’s life? (more…)
