1 Jn 4, 7-10.16-19

(more…)

1 John 4:7-10, 16-19

One line in the Song of Songs (8:6) tells us: “Love is strong as death.” And we recognize this desire within all love, don’t we? Within the love of a man for a woman, or a woman for a man; or parents for children, or other family relationships; or great friendships; or even in love for a place, a nation, an idea, a work of art. In love we want our love, and especially the beloved, and ourselves as those who love, to be impervious to death. (more…)

1 Cor 15, 12-20

(more…)

1 Cor 15:12-20

Do we believe in the immortality of the soul, or the resurrection of the body?

It might seem that I am creating a trick question in putting it that way, since the answer is actually: “Both.” But it is actually a helpful question, because it reminds us that the two concepts are not exactly the same. And it is possible to believe in one without the other; or even to emphasize one to such a degree that we accidentally forget the other.

We stand this evening within the Easter Season—these 50 days every year when we celebrate the amazing truth of our Lord Jesus Christ’s resurrection in the flesh. (more…)

Acts 10:34, 37-43; Ps 118; Col 3:1-4; John 20:1-9

They did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead. Standing right there in the empty tomb, where just hours earlier the most extraordinary event had happened—Jesus Christ had risen from the dead—they did not understand.

And for good reason. First, they were traumatized. Not 72 hours before, they had seen this great teacher and healer, who they had followed for years, captured and dragged away to be falsely accused and condemned to a horrible death by the authorities. They were scarred, and afraid for their own lives. How could they understand?

Second, they knew, like we do, that dead people don’t just get up and walk around again. (more…)
