Sir 3:2-6, 12-14; Ps 128; Col 3:12-17; Matt 2:13-15, 19-23

Three years ago, I had the privilege to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land with a group of other priests. Of course, one of the places we went was Nazareth. There, we visited the large church called the Basilica of the Annunciation—marking the spot where the angel Gabriel visited Mary and invited her to become the Mother of God; where she said yes; and thus the very spot, marked, where the Word was made flesh.

But there on the same property is a smaller church, the Church of St. Joseph. It was there that we celebrated Mass. This church contains artwork not only of St. Joseph himself, but of the Holy Family: (more…)

At the Procession with Palms
John 12:12-16

Once again we begin Holy Week as we always do: with a joyful procession with palm branches. For so the first Holy Week began on that first Palm Sunday so many years ago: with cloaks and palm branches spread on the road, and palm branches held high, in welcome for the king!

The king, the Son of the great King David, the Messiah, the King of Israel had arrived in Jerusalem! With what joy the crowd welcomed our Lord Jesus! With what hope! (more…)

Is 45, 1.4-6; Sal 95; 1 Tes 1, 1-5; Mt 22, 15-21

(more…)

Remember whose you are

29th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A: Oct. 16, 2011
Isa 45:1, 4-6; Ps 96; 1 Thess 1:1-5; Matt 22:15-21

When I was in high school and college, and I was at the train station or the airport, about to head back to school, sometimes my dad would say to me before we parted: “Remember whose you are.”

This simple admonition captures the core of what is going on in the incident that we hear in our Gospel reading today. The opponents of our Lord Jesus are trying to trap him publicly by forcing him to say either something dangerous or something deeply unpopular. “Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?” they ask. Stem Cells & Cloning

Faith Seeks Understanding: The Gift of Life, 4 of 6

Father Dan continues a series of classes on life issues (pressed upon us by new technologies) by examining stem cells: embryonic, adult, and reprogrammed. Which can we research and use morally? Why would someone want to clone a human being? How is the government involved in all this? What are different ways of cooperating with an evil act, and what does this mean for our choices?
