In about two weeks, our Holy Father Pope Francis is going to arrive here in the U.S.—indeed, here in the Washington, D.C., area—to visit us. We know that he has gained a great deal of attention by many people since he was elected as Pope, and that many people find him a fascinating and attractive person. One of the aspects for which Pope Francis is famous is his concern for the poor, and his readiness to reach out and embrace people who are poor or who live with difficult physical or life circumstances.

And surely we can imagine Pope Francis giving us the same admonition that we heard from St. James in our second reading today. (more…)

1st Sunday of Advent, Year A: Dec. 1, 2013
Isa 2:1-5; Ps 122; Rom 13:11-14; Matt 24:37-44

A few weeks ago, I was visiting one of our classes in the school; and in their religion textbook they were beginning a chapter entitled “Christ Will Come Again.” It was a chapter that presented to them this truth that we believe and that we profess each week: that Jesus will come again in glory; that we look forward to his Second Coming.

And this is the primary focus of Advent. The word “Advent” itself comes from the Latin for coming or arrival: it is Jesus’ coming, his Second Coming, that we called to look forward to, and to prepare for. (more…)

Tengo buenas noticias y malas noticias.

The bucket list and the narrow gate

Listen to mp3 file
21st Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C: Aug. 25, 2013
Isa 66:18-21; Ps 117; Heb 12:5-7, 11-13; Luke 13:22-30

Do you have a bucket list? You know: one of those lists of things that you want to before you die, before you “kick the bucket.” I’ve heard that phrase fairly often since the movie of that same title came out several years ago. And usually the actions on those lists are things that are fun and exciting.

But let me ask you another question: Do you believe in heaven? Do you intend to go to heaven? And if you do, then why have a bucket list?

Is it because you think that heaven is boring, and this earthly life is so much more exciting? (more…)

(more…)

To see the risen Christ and bear witness

2nd Sunday of Easter, Year C: April 7, 2013
Acts 5:12-16; Ps 118; Rev 1:9-13, 17-19; John 20:19-31

On that first Easter Sunday—on the evening of that first day of the weekthe disciples were shut up in a room, with the doors locked, for fear—for fear that the same authorities who had just put Jesus to death would come after them next. And one week later they were inside again with the doors locked again—even though they knew he was risen.

But how much things had changed by the time of our first reading, which was probably just several months later. (more…)
