April 27, 2014

Acts 2:42-47; Ps 118; 1 Pet 1:3-9; John 20:19-31

A week and a half ago we marked Good Friday, when our Lord Jesus was unjustly condemned and made to die a criminal’s death upon a cross. To make sure he was really dead, one of the soldiers thrust his lance into his side, into his Sacred Heart, and immediately blood and water flowed out. (John 19:34) And his dead body was placed into the tomb.

On the third day, he rose again, triumphant over death, and transformed, the firstfruits of the Resurrection. And he appeared to a number of his disciples, and what a difference it made for them! They rejoiced! (more…)

La verdad del Viernes Santo

Viernes Santo de la Pasión del Señor: 29 Marzo 2013
Is 52, 13—53, 12; Sal 30; Heb 4, 14-16; 5, 7-9; Jn 18, 1—19, 42

(more…)

The truth of Good Friday

This is a translation of the Spanish homily I preached.
Good Friday of the Passion of the Lord: March 29, 2013
Isa 52:13–53:12; Ps 31; Heb 4:14-16, 5:7-9; John 18:1–19:42

On Good Friday we come face to face with the Passion, the suffering, of our Lord Jesus Christ. And it is terrible, painful suffering. It hits us hard to witness it: to hear it again, to see it again, in drama and liturgy, in memory and history.

Indeed, we are amazed at him—as we heard in the first reading: amazed at him—so marred was his look beyond human semblance and his appearance beyond that of the sons of man… (more…)

What kind of king is Jesus?

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, Year B: Nov. 25, 2012
Dan 7:13-14; Ps 93; Rev 1:5-8; John 18:33-37

In our Gospel reading today, it is the morning of Good Friday. Jesus had been captured and questioned during the night by the Jewish authorities—but, because they are not authorized to carry out the death penalty, they have brought him to the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate, seeking his execution. And so we hear Pilate’s initial questioning of Jesus.

He begins by asking, “Are you the king of the Jews?” And do you notice that Jesus does not answer this question directly? Instead, he asks Pilate a question: “Do you say this on your own or have others told you about me?” Who is questioning, and who is being questioned, has been reversed. Now it is Jesus examining Pilate: his heart, his thoughts, his intentions, his identity. How ready is Pilate to accept Jesus as king? (more…)

How great is the Divine Mercy!

2nd Sunday of Easter (or of Divine Mercy): April 15, 2012
Acts 4:32-35; Ps 118; 1 John 5:1-6; John 20:19-31

Nine days ago, we remembered the sorrowful Passion of our Lord Jesus: when he freely stretched out his arms between heaven and earth, and poured out his Precious Blood for us. And for those who were putting him to death, who were pounding the nails into his hands and feet, he said: “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34)

Nine days ago, we remembered that great provision of Divine Mercy, when, after our Lord Jesus had handed over the spirit, a soldier thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out (John 19:30, 34)—those two great streams of grace that were symbolized by the two rays of light that St. Faustina saw shining forth from his Heart: (more…)
