Groaning, hoping, and the down payment of the Spirit

Pentecost Sunday: May 18, 2013
At the Vigil Mass: Gen 11:1-9; Ps 104; Rom 8:22-27; John 7:37-39

The world is groaning. We heard St. Paul write in our first reading: all creation is groaning—is groaning in labor pains even until now; and not only that, but we ourselves… we also groan. Why this groaning? You know. In the verses immediately before this passage, he speaks of the sufferings of this present time; of futility; of slavery to corruption. And we all know what that means. It means political corruption and terrorism; it means sickness and death; it means drudgery and depression; it means conflict and heartache. And so we groan.

And like children on a trip, we say: “Are we there yet?” Because we have hope. (more…)

33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B: Nov. 18, 2012
Dan 12:1-3; Ps 16; Heb 10:11-14, 18; Mark 13:24-32

And today we hear a portion of Chapter 13 of that Gospel, in which Jesus is telling his disciples what to expect in the future—so that this chapter is sometimes known as the “Little Apocalypse.”

And we notice that he cautions them: “Of that day or hour, no one knows.” (more…)

An explanatory Mass in Advent

Audio only: Listen to mp3 file (Length: 1:11:07)

During the Advent Season we prepare for the Second Coming of Christ. In talks from an explanatory Mass, Father Dan explores how the Mass is a “pledge of the glory to come” and a participation in the worship of heaven; and how “ad orientem” celebration fits well with Advent. He also introduces us to the sacred vessels and cloths used in the Mass, and ties it all together with a homily on John the Baptist’s message to us.
