In our Gospel reading today, our Lord Jesus is in the midst of his famous Sermon on the Mount. And in this section, we hear him say: “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink. Do not worry about your body, what you will wear.” He is trying to get us to stop worrying about these material things, and to have peace instead.

La vista de nuestras lecturas hoy es una vista muy ancha—una vista internacional o universal. Y así es una vista que conocemos bien hoy. Pero, al mismo tiempo, se manifiesta como una vista muy personal; y así nos presenta un mensaje muy pertinente.

En la primera lectura, oímos el Señor hablando de su ungido, Ciro. ¡Qué sorpresa! ¡Qué impresión! Pero, ¿por qué? Porque esa lenguaje de unción y de un ungido, en el Pueblo de Israel en el siglo VI antes de Cristo, perteneció a sus sacerdotes y sus reyes—sus “mesías,” que significa, literalmente, ungidos. There is a Catholic blogger, a young wife and mother, who recently invited her readers to imagine the following: Imagine that you have taken a trip to Mongolia. And you’ve got quite a bit of time to explore this far-off land. And so one day you are hiking over some remote plateaus, where not very many people live. And off in the distance, you see a human figure, a long way off. And this person is coming toward you, closer and closer. You figure it must be one of the local Mongolians who live in that region. This person comes closer and closer. And then you recognize him: it’s your next-door neighbor, from Maryland! What is he doing here? (more…)
