Today we hear our Lord Jesus tell the parable that is often known as the “dishonest steward.” And this is a parable that often puzzles people. We might wonder: Why does the steward’s master commend him for changing the promissory notes of the debtors? Is Jesus telling us that we should act like the steward; and, if so, how?

It seems that Jesus is shifting between different details of his parable, and different analogies, in a way that can be confusing. But if we dig into this a bit, I think we discover a single, basic message that he is trying to convey to us. (more…)

(more…)

¿A quién quieres agradar?

(more…)

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Where do you want to be, and what do you want to be doing? Who do you want to be? What will count as success? And how will you reach that success—what strengths, skills, resources will you draw upon? What personal mission will you be accomplishing? Who will be pleased and proud of you? Who do you want to be in 10 years?

If you have worked through certain seminars or methods in priorities and time management, you may already have those questions precisely answered and right on the tip of your tongue. If not, you surely have some idea of the answers within you and could work them out with some thought and reflection. It’s pretty basic to being human to have a sense of identity and direction. There is a Catholic blogger, a young wife and mother, who recently invited her readers to imagine the following: Imagine that you have taken a trip to Mongolia. And you’ve got quite a bit of time to explore this far-off land. And so one day you are hiking over some remote plateaus, where not very many people live. And off in the distance, you see a human figure, a long way off. And this person is coming toward you, closer and closer. You figure it must be one of the local Mongolians who live in that region. This person comes closer and closer. And then you recognize him: it’s your next-door neighbor, from Maryland! What is he doing here? (more…)
