Today we begin the new Church Year. And we know that the two greatest feast days of the year—the two poles on which the whole year hangs—are Christmas and Easter. Christmas, which celebrates the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus—that God the Son took on human nature, and became man—and was born for us, a baby in Bethlehem; and Easter, which celebrates his passion, death, and resurrection:  all of this to save us! And we celebrate these two feasts not only as single days but as the beginnings of the Christmas season and Easter season; and in both cases we prepare for them with special seasons of preparation. Su fuego trae el cambio

XX Domingo Ordinario, Año C: 18 Agosto 2013
Jr 38, 4-6.8-10; Sal 39; Hb 12, 1-4; Lc 12, 49-53

(more…)

His fire brings change

20th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C: Aug. 18, 2013
Jer 38:4-6, 8-10; Ps 40; Heb 12:1-4; Luke 12:49-53

I often heard it said that “people don’t like change.” It seems that this increases as we get older; and it certainly increases when things are going the way that we want them to, and we have our lives arranged just so. Indeed, it seems that Americans have a talent for changing every religion they meet—whether it be Catholicism or Buddhism or whatever—into the message that we are perfect just the way we are, and we don’t need to change at all; it’s everyone else who needs to change! Just leave us in peace.

But this is not the message and mission of our Lord Jesus. (more…)

¿Quién ama el cuerpo? ¿Quién desea la resurrección?

Homilía en Novena de la Medalla Milagrosa, 8 Abril 2013
1 Cor 15, 12-20

(more…)

Who loves the body? Who wants the resurrection?

Homily at Miraculous Medal Novena, April 8, 2013
1 Cor 15:12-20

Do we believe in the immortality of the soul, or the resurrection of the body?

It might seem that I am creating a trick question in putting it that way, since the answer is actually: “Both.” But it is actually a helpful question, because it reminds us that the two concepts are not exactly the same. And it is possible to believe in one without the other; or even to emphasize one to such a degree that we accidentally forget the other.

We stand this evening within the Easter Season—these 50 days every year when we celebrate the amazing truth of our Lord Jesus Christ’s resurrection in the flesh. (more…)
