16th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C: July 21, 2013
Gen 18:1-10; Ps 15; Col 1:24-28; Luke 10:38-42

The scene in our first reading is memorable. Abraham and his household are camped near Hebron, some 20 miles to the south of present-day Jerusalem in the Holy Land. It was a hot day, and perhaps Abraham was dozing as he sat in the entrance of his tent during the heat of the day. Then, suddenly, he looked up and saw three men. He sprang into action. Offering hospitality was an incredibly important duty in his culture—far more so than in ours—and he hurried to do so—he ran to greet them. And he begged them: Please do not pass your servant by. Many in our society today are careful about the food that they eat and provide to their family—seeking to ensure that it is free from hormones, chemicals, pesticides, or other substances that might harm their bodies or their loved ones.  Yet how many of these same careful people use or approve of contraceptive methods that fill a woman’s body with hormones or chemicals—quite unaware that there is a method of family planning that does not require pills, patches, implants, or injections, but instead is as all-natural as the food they eat? Sharing the Good News, here and now!

14th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C: July 7, 2013
Isa 66:10-14; Ps 66; Gal 6:14-18; Luke 10:1-12, 17-20

What an adventure these 72 disciples of Jesus experienced! What a commission, and what results! Our Gospel reading today comes within the long, gradual journey that our Lord Jesus is making from Galilee to Jerusalem, where he will give his life for us on the cross. And we hear today about how he sent these 72 disciples of his ahead of him to every town and place he intended to visit.

Can you imagine being sent on that mission? Going with one other person to places you had never been; speaking to people you had never met; traveling light, as he instructed; moving fast; knowing that many would reject your message, but just moving on to those who would receive it? (more…)

¡Qué aventura experimentaron estos 72 discípulos de Jesús! ¡Qué comisión, y qué resultados! Nuestra lectura del Evangelio de hoy aparece dentro de ese viaje largo y gradual que nuestro Señor Jesús hace de Galilea a Jerusalén, donde dará su vida por nosotros en la cruz. Y hoy escuchamos de cómo envió a estos 72 discípulos suyos por delante de él a todos los pueblos y lugares a donde pensaba ir.

¿Puede imaginar ser enviado en esa misión? ¿Ir con una persona a lugares que nunca había estado; hablar con gente que nunca había conocido; viajar con pocas posesiones, como él pidió; mover rápido; saber que muchos rechazarían su mensaje, pero simplemente continuar a los que lo recibirían? (more…)
