Easter Sunday: April 24, 2011
Acts 10:34, 37-43; Ps 118; 1 Cor 5:6-8; John 20:1-9

Happy Easter, everyone! Christ is risen! He is truly risen! Alleluia!

As we heard in our Gospel reading, St. Mary Magdalene arrived at his tomb that first Easter Sunday morning to find the stone rolled away and the tomb empty. For Christ was not there: he had been raised!

But I wonder: What happened inside that tomb? Christ was raised from the dead; but what would a camera inside the tomb have recorded? What would scientific instruments have detected? (more…)

Holy Thursday: April 21, 2011
Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper

Exod 12:1-8, 11-14; Ps 116; 1 Cor 11:23-26; John 13:1-15

He loved his own in the world and he loved them to the end.

Brothers and sisters, this evening we celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. And so we begin the Easter Triduum—the three days of the Passion and Resurrection of the Lord. This is the culmination of the liturgical year: the very highest point of our entering, week by week, into every facet of our Lord’s life and of the mystery of our redemption.

We know what is coming—just as surely as our Lord Jesus knew what was coming, that Thursday evening, nearly 2000 years ago. We know the tremendous suffering and darkness and death that are coming, within hours!—as he did. But first comes something else. First comes love. (more…)

Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, Year A: April 16-17, 2011

At the Procession with Palms
Matt 21:1-11

What anticipation there must have been in the crowd on that Sunday, entering Jerusalem! What excitement! Like all the People of Israel, they longed to be liberated from the rule of the Roman Empire. They looked forward to the day when the Holy Land would again be completely devoted to the Lord. And they prayed, asking the Lord to send his Messiah—his Anointed One, the long-awaited descendant of the great King David—to save them.

And now, it seemed, perhaps it was all beginning to happen. At last! They cried: “Hosanna!” (more…)

5th Sunday of Lent, Year A: April 10, 2011
Ezek 37:12-14; Ps 130; Rom 8:8-11; John 11:1-45

“Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

This cry, which we hear from the lips of both Martha and Mary, is in essence the same cry that we hear from so many in our world—and even from ourselves. “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

Cried out when a loved one dies: especially a child; a baby; an adult who is still too young. When a freak accident takes away something forever. When a job is lost: suddenly, unfairly, that you needed. (more…)

Darkness, blindness, sin, and the light of Christ

4th Sunday of Lent, Year A: April 3, 2011
1 Sam 16:1, 6-7, 10-13; Ps 23; Eph 5:8-14; John 9:1-41

You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. What a great sentence! And what a cause for joy, on this Laetare Sunday when we rejoice as we remember the joyful purpose and goal for which we engage in Lenten penance: to attain to the resurrection and reach heavenly glory.

You were once darkness—and what does someone who is darkness look like? What did you look like when you were darkness? Well, first of all, you looked like a newborn baby. That’s what you looked like when you were darkness.

But how can that be? So little and cute and precious? (more…)
