Make your heart a home for Christ

2nd Sunday of Lent, Year C: February 28, 2010
Gen 15:5-12, 17-18; Ps 27:1, 7-9, 13-14; Phil 3:17–4:1; Luke 9:28-36

I gave this homily in Spanish. I thought I would translate it into English and post the text here; but there is no mp3 of the English version.

Today’s Gospel reading tells us the story of the Transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ. In an instant, these three disciples, Peter, John, and James, experienced Jesus in a way that was completely different from the months and years that they had already spent with him. They had traveled with him, eaten with him, listened to his teaching, and seen his miracles. But now they saw him with his face changed in appearance and his clothing having become dazzling white—conversing with Moses and Elijah, those great figures from the history of the People of Israel, who represented the Law and the Prophets. In that brilliant moment, they saw Jesus clearly, with his divinity made visible to their own eyes, and they came to know him in a new way. (more…)

II Domingo de Cuaresma, Año C: 28 Febrero 2010
Gen 15:5-12, 17-18; Ps 26(27):1, 7-9, 13-14; Fil 3:17–4:1; Luc 9:28-36

(more…)

1st Sunday of Lent, Year C: Feb. 20-21, 2010
Deut 26:4-10; Ps 91:1-2, 10-15; Rom 10:8-13; Luke 4:1-13

How many times have we seen a hero fall? How many times have we seen someone in the public eye—someone who had seemed strong, noble, generous, principled—and then one day we find out that they have been corrupted; that they have been making secret backroom deals; that they embezzled, lied, cheated, stole; that they are addicted to drugs or alcohol; that they have betrayed their spouse or their children.

Perhaps only the young haven’t yet discovered, as one songwriter put it [Steve Taylor, “Hero”], “that illusions are bought / And the idol you thought you’d be was just another zero.” That in the quiet, hidden choices, that make all the difference, those seeming heroes fell; they crumbled, and down they went. The Social Teaching of the Church

Audio only: Listen to mp3 file (Length: 1:08:10) (RCIA)

Some call it the Church’s best-kept secret! Since 1891, Popes and Councils have applied the Church’s constant moral teaching to the new, ever-changing challenges that face our society and world. Father Dan considers the Church’s affirmation of human dignity that is its foundation, and the five main principles on which it turns.
