Advent: Let us prepare for the glorious coming of Christ

Listen to mp3 file
1st Sunday of Advent, Year C: Nov. 29, 2009
Jer 33:14-16; Ps 25:4-5, 8-10, 14; 1 Thess 3:12–4:2; Luke 21:25-28, 34-36

This is a season of preparation—because Someone is coming to town! And everybody is getting ready—one way or another.

It seems that everything changes at this time of year as everyone is anticipating and preparing. The music changes. Television programming changes. Advertising changes. Traffic changes, as everyone heads to the stores; well, everyone except the people from our parish, who got all our Christmas shopping done at the Bazaar, back at the beginning of the month! But everyone else is going shopping right now. Normal plans for evenings and weekends get set aside, and instead (more…)

(more…)

Long Live Christ the King!

34th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B: Nov. 21-22, 2009
Our Lord Jesus Christ the King

Dan 7:13-14; Ps 93:1-2, 5; Rev 1:5-8; John 18:33-37

Pilate said to Jesus, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And Jesus answered him by speaking about his kingdom. “My kingdom does not belong to this world.” What does he mean by this? If Jesus is a king, what is his kingdom like?

  • When we think of “a kingdom” in the ordinary sense, perhaps the first thing we think of is: land. A particular territory of land, with boundaries that mark it off as separate from other territories of land. Jesus didn’t come to take over an area of land.
  • And perhaps we also think of the royal army that defends those borders against aggressors. But Jesus said, (more…)

Christ’s Second Coming: Be Hopeful! Be Watchful!

33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B: Nov. 14-15, 2009
Dan 12:1-3; Ps 16:5, 8-11; Heb 10:11-14, 18; Mark 13:24-32

Every Sunday, we confess in the Creed that our Lord Jesus Christ will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. When you think of Jesus’ Second Coming, what comes to your mind?

  • Do you think of the bumper sticker that reads, “In case of Rapture, this car will be unmanned”? And do you imagine those who follow Jesus disappearing from cars and planes and houses, suddenly gone, while everyday life mostly goes on?
  • Or, do you imagine the great disasters in movies like “Armageddon” or “2012,” with famous buildings blown up, and bridges smashed, and California dumped into the ocean, (more…)

Masks, Hypocrites, and Saints

All Saints: Oct. 31–Nov. 1, 2009
Rev 7:2-4, 9-14; Ps 24:1-6; 1 John 3:1-3; Matt 5:1-12a

If one of my late grandmothers were here, she would have taken one look at you sitting here in the pews and said, or at least thought, “You’re all a bunch of hypocrites.” Why? What did you do? Well, you’re in church! And she would think that I, as the priest, was the worst one of all! When she was growing up in Michigan in the ’20s and ’30s, she was raised Methodist; and as soon as she had the chance she left it all behind—home, Michigan, church. As my mom was growing up, she regularly heard my grandmother say, “The church is just a bunch of hypocrites.”

My grandmother wasn’t very nice sometimes, was she? And why talk about hypocrisy on All Saints? (more…)
